Our Story
The Cavalier Legacy
Since arriving in South Louisiana from the Canary Islands in the late 1700s, the Cavalier family has been bound to the land and the livestock it supports. The Cavalier family records indicate that 18% were farmers, 15% kept house and 15% were farm laborers. At first animals, mainly chickens, cattle, and hogs were raised to provide food for themselves. That trend continued until Elves Antione “Lupe” Cavalier, a sugar cane laborer who worked the land on Halfway Plantation, near Belle Rose, Louisiana, started putting multiple calves on the family milk cow and began building a herd of cattle where the offspring could be sold and also utilized for meat.
Elves “Lupe” Cavalier (1906-1979) instilled in his son, Elvis J. Cavalier, a love of raising cattle and an appreciation for the land. Cavalier, who is a national award-winning educator, instilled in his children and grandchildren a credo of taking care of the land and the livestock that it supports. Cavalier moved to Saint James Parish nearly 3 decades ago to advance his career. He purchased a part of the old Moonshine Plantation from Bobby Chenier in 1999, and another section of land from Bobby Dakin in 2004, to form ET Ranch, LLC. The company is a very diverse enterprise ranging from cattle raising to educational consulting.
Tad A. Cavalier, Elvis J. Cavalier’s son, basically handles the daily operation of the ranch. Tad, a former FFA officer, has been involved with cattle his entire life, from bottle-raising baby calves to producing championship Beefmaster heifers. Tad’s goal is to produce and sell cattle that will excel in both the show ring and the sale barn.
Our cattle are not pets, but they know us and we know them. We respect them and they respect us. Tad's son Ethan, who is only nine years old, recently was very successful in his livestock show debut, winning a showmanship belt buckle and several awards.
